Elaine picked up a last minute 6 day Amsterdam trip out of Portland with the intention of Sierra, Cooper and I joining over Thanksgiving week. As luck would have it the flights were open so I rearranged my work schedule, Sierra and Cooper missed a day of school (short week because of the holiday), and we headed over to the Netherlands!
Our days were spent trying to stay warm and dry as we explored the city by foot (the weather was similar to the Northwest this time of year - cold and wet). We visited the Anne Frank museum, which was a bit sobering for Sierra and Cooper, and the NEMO science museum (think OMSI) which was a hit. Cooper was enthralled with the central train station, and subsequent train rides. Sierra enjoyed riding the ferry's around town, and they both thought that daily visits to pastry shops were worth the jet lag! A highlight for me was visiting some old-school windmills and seeing their clock-like inner workings. And Elaine’s highlight was having the family join her on an extended layover. We had a Thanksgiving feast at a Thai restaurant that served delicious food, rounding out our non-traditional holiday. All and all I’d say the trip was a great introduction to Europe for Sierra and Cooper (who had never been)!
