8 November 2007

We've whizzed into November.  October, like all the other months, flew by.

The month started the month with Jake, Sierra, Cooper and I heading down to Bucerias Mexico during Sierra's fall break from school.  The weather was fantastic and fun time was had by all.  I had no idea that Sierra and Cooper could spend so much time in the water and sun.  We spent most of our days at the beach, where they frolicked in the sand and water, then came home in the afternoon and spent all evening in the pool.  They played hard and slept even harder!

The day we returned from our Mexican adventure Sierra and Cooper woke up telling us it was time to put up our Halloween decorations.  After spending hours decorating the house, they both said "Is that all the decorations we have?  We need more!  When are we going to pick out our pumpkins?"  Their excitement level was off the Richter scale!  For the last couple of months Sierra and Cooper have been 'practicing' wearing their costumes in preparation for the big night, until the natural feeling set in that time must of stopped, because Halloween still isn't here yet!  Finally, on the 26th, Sierra's school had a "Treat and Eat" night where the students and their families could "trick-or-treat" from class room to class room.  Sierra went as Strawberry Shortcake and Cooper as a clown - and they were both elated to take part in the festivities.  After receiving more candy than anyone could possibly eat, we made it to the gym - which was filled with big bouncy toys, slides, and games.  At some point over a PTA meeting the question must have been asked "what do you do with an elementary school full of candy crazed kids" . . . set them loose in the gym of course!  Needless to say, we stayed in the gym for the rest of the night and Sierra and Cooper went to bed happy.

On Halloween, a few days later, Sierra chose to be a dancer girl and Cooper decided to be a police man.  We had a fantastic evening trick-or-treating through the neighborhood, enjoying the unseasonably warm weather.  Our friends Nathan and Noah from down the block joined us rounding out the motley crew.  The kids were overloaded with candy in no time, having to empty their bags twice in the hour and a half we were out.  I honestly didn't think we had that many people in our neighborhood, but they sure raked in the candy!  Upon coming home, Cooper promptly filled his mouth with as much candy as he could fit in - while Sierra meticulously counted and organized her loot.  She spent a good 5 minutes trying to decide which piece of candy she was going to eat before bed.  It is amazing how 2 children from the same parents can be so different!

The next weekend Jake, Sierra, Cooper and I took advantage of a four day Election Day 'break' from (Sierra's) school and headed up to Washington DC.  As the flight from Cincinnati is only about an hour, we were able to take an early morning flight and spend a full day at the Zoo.  The Panda bears were Sierra's favorite animal and the Hippopotamus was Cooper's.  We don't have either in our zoo, so I'm sure their 'favorite' choices were influenced by seeing something new.  The next two days were spent at the Air and Space museum, National History museum and walking around seeing the different monuments - including a trip inside the White House.  Hats off to both Sierra and Cooper - who were both real troopers, literally walking (long tiring) miles yet were still able to keep their sense of humor as well as a sense of wonderment in the sights!  After one last dash to the Natural History museum (the favorite 'sight' of the trip), we headed back to the airport and the quick flight home for a 'school night' bedtime. Not a bad weekend at all - definitely on the list for repeat visits!

Looking into November, we are excited to be heading up to Cleveland for Thanksgiving.  I was able to swap one of my trips away allowing us to drive up north for all the festivities.  Yeah!  It will be wonderful to spend time with my family and maybe even get to see a few friends while we are in town.

In early December we will be going out to Portland for our annual 'between the holidays' get together with Jake's family, where we hope to continue our tradition of bringing back a Christmas tree.  And in late December we are all looking forward to a visit from the 'big man' himself, Santa!

I hope everyone has a good couple of months! Take care.
