We had a fun nine day family trip to Costa Rica over spring break. Our friends Mike, Teri and their son Henry (Sierra's age) were also able to join us on the last minute trip.
Our time was split between Playa Brasilito and Playa Grande, making day trips to surrounding beaches. Over our visit we explored Playas Grande, Pan de Azucar, Conchal, Potrero, Brasilito and Tamarindo (in order from our favorite to least). "Wave jumping", collecting shells, digging in the sand and playing tag kept us busy to our hearts content, only being torn away by the intense rays of the sun, hunger or sheer exhaustion.
The animal life along the "Playas" and estuaries was pretty amazing - certainly different than Kentucky. The highlight for me was seeing hatchling leatherback sea turtles, but we also saw a sea snake, "Halloween crab", sea snails, sand dollars, jellyfish, hermit crabs, both green and black iguanas, geckos, lizards, toads, crocodiles and howler monkeys. The birds were equally amazing, seeing spoon bills, egrets, ibis, osprey, wren, orioles, pelican, hummingbirds, parakeets, parrots, along with green, great blue and tricolored heron.
All and all it was a relaxing trip, perking our interest for a future trip to Playa Grande for a hopeful glimpse of leatherback sea turtles laying eggs during their nesting season.
