September 2008
We had a "wind
event", knocking out the electricity for 52 hours (which caused us to
"say goodbye" to all of our refrigerated and frozen food). I feel
like a bit of a weenie saying this, but it life without electricity was
not as much fun as I remember.

Lightning in the neighborhood . . . yowza!
I'm still amazed by the Midwest thunderstorms. Winds howl, hail
comes down the size of grapes, and lightning strikes every 15 seconds in
all four directions. These storms will roll across our area, causing
warning sirens to ring (think WWII air raid or rural volunteer fire
department), sending everyone scampering inside to turn on their T.V. -
tuning in to watch the local weather guy (who has suspended scheduled
programming). It can be an odd sensation, after having enjoyed a
beautiful day - and not seeing a cloud in the sky, to have to scurry in
your house and hunker down knowing that all hell is about ready to break
loose.
The image below (click to enlarge) gives you a look at how these storms
will come though in a wave(s). The photo is a Doppler of the storm
progressing over our area just before it caused the lightning in the
photos above.
